30 Days of Thankful - Day 6

This morning, I am thankful to be from the great state of Louisiana.  Many of you may have heard about a little football game that took place last night in Tuscaloosa between Alabama and LSU.  Many of you may have stayed up to see the outcome.  For those of you who did not, LSU sustained and remains the #1 football team in the country.  Woo Hoo!  Geaux Tigers!

But, besides the fact that I love those Bengals, I do love the state that I was raised in for 22 years.  Louisiana has such a RICH culture that I have grown to appreciate since moving away.  The stories from the past of how the state was settled - Spanish and French led the way for the Cajuns and Creoles.  I love the accents, the easy way that the French language is incorporated into every day talk.  Words like beaucoup and laignappe, chere, and bebe.  I love the food - gumbo, red beans and rice, crawfish etouffee, beignets, etc.

I love visiting New Orleans and looking at the architecture of the buildings - wrought iron balconies covered with flower baskets, shutters, heavy doors, brick floors, courtyards hidden in the least expected places.    The music pouring out of restaurants, jazz clubs, and kids playing on the street.  There's no where quite like it.

One of these days, I'll visit River Road and peruse the plantation homes, take a riverboat cruise, learn how to make a good gumbo and etouffee.  But for now, I'm thankful to call Louisiana home.

You make me hungry just reading your blog about Louisiana. You know I really think sometimes you have to be away from a place before you really appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing ya'll come "home" soon.

Love,
Mom
